NICOLE had to work the next day, so Michael decided to do something he had been thinking about for a while. He knew every bar and pool hall downtown, but parked in the movie theater parking lot instead. Anyone who recognized his truck would assume he was slurping sodas, wolfing popcorn, and watching an action movie.
He wasn’t entirely sure what he was searching for. Vance, the man with eyes so like his own, had been found near the Red Velvet Pool Hall, so that was where Michael started. Before long, as he sat drinking a beer and feeling ridiculous, he saw an athletic man walk to the back, past the pool tables, past the bathrooms. The stranger swaggered through a door without knocking, but from his slight pause before shutting the door behind him, he talked to someone, most likely a guard.
Michael waited ten minutes and followed.
As soon as he stepped in the door, a huge biker stopped him. The man was fat, but cords of muscle twisted on his tattoo-covered arms and there was a Desert Eagle .44 Magnum pistol poorly concealed in a shoulder rig under his leather vest.
“Do I know you?” the biker asked.
“I hope not. I’m just here for the show.”
“You have ID?”
“No. I didn’t think I would need it for this kind of thing.” Michael tried to look bored as he scanned the small area for clues. Where did that guy go?
“Did you drive?” the biker asked.
“What?”
“Because you would have to have your driver’s license if you did.”
“What are you? A cop or something?” Michael asked.
The man grunted. “Nothing back there but storage and a basement. You can’t take weapons or cash. House rules.”
Michael removed money from his wallet and placed it on a wooden stool by the door. Then he spread his hands and allowed the man to look at him.
“I have to pat you down,” the man said.
Michael shook his head. “No you don’t.”
They stared at each other until the man shrugged and scooped up the cash on the stool and sat down.
“You’re the worst fucking security guard I’ve ever met,” Michael said.
Faster than seemed possible, the man lunged to his feet and grabbed Michael’s shirt with both hands. At the same time, Michael snatched the pistol from the man’s shoulder holster and pushed it against his temple. “I’ll give you back the gun when I leave and maybe you won’t get fired. Sit down.”
The man pushed him. Michael pushed the gun and established a deadly stalemate. With his left hand, he applied a joint lock on the man’s right wrist and forced him to one knee.
“Look in my eyes,” Michael said.
The man stared up angrily.
“How do you feel about your chances?” Michael asked. He pulled back the gun but tightened the wristlock. “Keep the money. Keep your job. Keep your mouth shut.”
The man twisted his hand free and retreated as soon as he stood. “Don’t think I won’t remember you.”
“You know what?” Michael said. “I changed my mind about the gun. I think I’ll keep it.
